Letters from Baghdad (Screening): Directed by Sabine Krayenbühl and Zeva Oelbaum, this documentary film tells the extraordinary and dramatic story of Gertrude Bell, the most powerful woman in the British Empire in her day. She shaped the destiny of Iraq after World War I in ways that still reverberate today. More influential than her friend and colleague Lawrence of Arabia, why has she been written out of the history she helped make? Hosted by the British Institute for the Study of Iraq, all proceeds will support their 'Visiting Iraqi Scholars' programme that fosters scholarly exchange between Iraq and the rest of the world. Taking place on 13 September, 2017 at The British Academy, 10-11 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AH.
